right then.........after about 6 years of no mk2 worth having i nearly gave up and bought a mk1 GTE, im glad i didnt!!

well ive bought this off chris and its CLEAN!

it had a few little bits of rust spots here and there a few minor dents, there was like a seam sealer putty in all the normal rusty bits, its been cavity waxed and EVERY LITTLE blemish has a paint touch up stick over them, i didnt know what was under the putty stuff but looking at the rest of the car i took a chance, anyway i decided to strip it and paint it keeping the old theme but just giving it a little update at the same time.

i havnt even driven it yet...........

i bought it on sunday eve stripped it on monday spent 3 nights (6pm till 1am) on it after work and all day today but at least i got it painted today. hopefully buliding it back together over the weekend and will miss PV  >:(

i will pull the engine out and fix the oil leaks as i dont have shares in Castrol yet.  :P

ive done it the same colour and taken back all the spots of rust with a mini grinder, rust killed what was left and then the whole things been painted with base and laquar just so it will look like glass!! (I hope)

oh and we have put a slight crystal blue pearl in the laquar just to give the nasty beige colour a modern day twist.

more pictures to follow once its out the booth.

hope you like it cos i love it

any idea on wheels that will suit this theme?

i like the wheels on it but now its had the blue pearl they dont seem to cut it like when it was the pastel beige colour

was thinking about a set of mint 14" steels??

cant fit anything smaller than 14" as its got gte front brakes

thanks for the welcome guys

yep 14" banded was very high on my list and i think i will go for those

i dont really want alloys on it, and i think that standard 5.5"(i think) 14's are too narrow.

how about some 7" banded's?

i was going to get some golf steel wheels the type with holes all around the outer edge and a center cap, but the more im thinking then the more i like the bandeds.

i was going to get a set of 4 pot calipers and vented discs and put the standard wheels or maybe banded 13" wheels on it.

the side exhaust has to go though, im going to either get a stainless made up or go for a sri130 exhaust but either way ill put a little tail pipe on the back box.

my noise days are long gone now, the car is mainly for going to and from car shows, i live in cornwall and even santa pod is nearly a 800mile round trip and a 4am start and a 2am finish so noise and bumpy rides are all done with now, im 37 and have three kids!!

ive also got a 1991 mx5 and im going to fit a 20xe in that over the winter and im using this engine as it has cams, pullys, bolts, chipped ecu, Zafira gsi injectors, power cap and ill fit a standard xe into the cav, plus i know that by fitting a smaller tail pipe i might well loose 5-10 or even more BHP but thats not i want this car for

im after a nice smooth ride, nice and quite ( i was thinking about sound deading the car) and reliable.

the mx5 can be a bit rough around the edges and already has an ali bonnet and a LSD, lowered on spax adjustables and on 16" BBS copies.............here have  a look.

mx5bbs.jpg

thats what i want for track days/summer fun blasting around the cornish lanes in the beast, its good now but really lacks power badly, it snot even as fast as a vetra ecotec but will pretty much almost stay with a lotus elise on handling

those big 205 16 tyres are SOOOOO much better than the standard 185 14 its unreal, i know big tyres are better but this thing is like driving on slicks all round now!!

but back to the cav yes im hoping to get to billing with the car, it will still have this leaky engine in as ive run out of money to fix leaks/replace for a standard engine but i really want to just get behind the wheel and drive it.

i trailered it home, dropped it straight round the bodyshop and started stripping it the only driving ive done it rolled it off the trailer, 1st gear into the bodyshop about 25yards!!

it should be out the booth today and ill get more pictures later.

cheers again

dave

thanks guys

it was an expensive car given the work it needed and still needs but it is very clean and worth it to me. i paid £1400 for it about £300 to pick it up inc trailer hire etc

Other than paint it needs the box sorting out as the diff is noisey (F20 internals and diff in F16 case) the oil leaks need sorting out plus there is a bit of blue smoke when the revs hit about 8000rpm, but there is no rev counter so cant be 100% sure of revs.its going to owe me well over £5000 once im finished with it and will proberly be worth about £2000 at a push but thats not why we do it is it?

i cant find a cleaner one and all the time im looking the cleaner (if there are any) ones are starting to get rusty anyway.

im not a painter im an alarm and CCTV installer but doing the work myself as much as possible keeps the bill right down, untill tuesday id never prepped a car before just seen it done a few times, but with the credit crunch and my mate saying it would be about £1500-£2000 for a full strip, quick prep and paint and rebulid again i thought id better learn FAST!!

i didnt even know about newton abbot! yea will try too go when is it?

heres a better shot of the colour its a very dull day today and you cant see the pearl but you can just make it out under a sun lamp torch.

now the hard work starts 1500 flat wet and dry and machine polish :-[ spent 3 hours on it today SOLID and it looks like ive done 10mins, work

only reason for the fast work is because its a mates paint shop and he is selling up on weds thats why the work HAD to be done ASAP

oh and im in Fourlanes, Redruth

2 weeks isnt a problem ill have it built well buy then!

only problem is that on the 27th im doing the Rockingham VXR track day so ill have to miss it if its the same weekend.

costs???

duno, but materials inc paint, primer, high build, filler, etch primer, laquar, pearl cyrstal, booth tape (not cheapo masking tape) paper, DA discs, wet and dry, scotch cloth, scotch paste, foam paper, 3m door shut mask piping, G3 & G10

(belive me i didnt know about a 1/4 of this lot before last monday) plus electric, for lighting and compresser, gas for booth etc etc

has cost around £300 AT COST due to mates rates.

labour from the painter and lots of other prep i had no chance in the world of even getting half right has been about 12 hours @£15 hour (i was taking other work away while he done my car) so id say about £500 ISH but now ive done a lot of work i really do see that even at £2000 it would be a very good price given how much hard work is involved.

i wouldnt do it again too save £1500 id wait a year or so and save up!!!!!

but now its done mark (my mate) has said it would be about a drive in & drive out £2500-£3000 paint job if they did EVERYTHING

ive put over 50 hours into it after work, all day friday and saturday etc and i cant even machine polish it as i rubbed through the paint with 1500! YES 1500 is about as rough as the back of the wet and

dry paper!

i must admit though no matter how much of a saving it was i WOULDNT ever do it again, yea id strip and rebuild it maybe even da again but never strip the bonnet to bare metal that took 18 80grit da discs and 6 hours solid.

its worth every single peeny IMO but each to their own i guess

when i go to car shows again i will be checking evey show car comparing how good or bad mine is to theirs and im hoping fingers crossed im to fussy :) :)
