Hi all,

Bit of a weird one this - always wanted a MK2 as my dad had a couple and I loved them, learnt to drive in his E reg SRi 130 and the first car I ever helped him work on was his A reg 1.6L, so they kind of got me into cars.

I've always been a petrol head and I've gone through all the different phases - started with Peugeots and Citroens, modified with various levels of success. Then JDM stuff, an Integra, a couple of Civics. Subaru, had 2 Imprezas and a Legacy, and still have a 2018 Outback as a daily. Then got into old Mercs, until I sold my 190E 2.6 in 2022 for the deposit on the Subaru, and then just forgot to buy something interesting again, until I saw this in November (apologies for the crap pics, it's been raining since then and I've not had much chance to get some good ones)

It's a 1.6 SR that was fully restored back in 2012, 48k miles (no proof of that other than some old MOTs, not that bothered), original even down to the stereo except for a Weber carb and manual choke conversion.

Currently just doing little jobs as and when weather allows - got the stereo rebuilt and it promptly blew up 5 minutes after reinstalling it because the speaker wiring was dodged up so that's all been replaced, just waiting on the stereo coming back fixed again. Vintage Galaxy 105 sticker (if you're from West Yorkshire, you know!), carb tuning (runs without the choke now), and next weekends job is replacing the 20 year old tyres.

Plans are - a 5 speed gearbox, 40mm springs, Piper exhaust, some fogs if I can find them, then just enjoy!

Oh, and reason I'm not really a new member - I joined this forum back in 2009 looking for one and gave up, just realised when I tried to sign up and it said my email was already in use!

I've found this board while looking for information on Ascona's in general and more specifically Irmschers. I'm actually a total Mercedes guy but this car kind of found me itself.

[img width=800 height=800]http://www.upload.ee/image/5169843/11922942_10207185926828158_205735626_n.jpg

[img width=720 height=960]http://www.upload.ee/image/5169844/11949708_10207185927788182_1378075160_n.jpg

[img width=800 height=600]http://www.upload.ee/image/5169845/11950792_10207185932988312_1839945779_n.jpg

I've had it for a few days and I bought it for only one reason, quick search told me that they only made 1399 of these. Seems I've gotten myself a bit of rare Opel history here. How many of these are estimatedly survived?

What i know about this car... It's an original Irmscher, it has the correct seats and upholstery (with cigarette holes and tears), the original steering wheel. I imagine that electric mirrors and board computer might be more common extras on other Asconas/Cavaliers aswell. Sits on original wheels and i think the lowering springs are there from factory aswell. Oh yea, it has glass sunroof and very cool Sony speakers at the back. The car also has had a respray once, thats probably why it doesn't have black stripes.

Downsides. Having been parked outside for years has made a mess, some rust on rear arches and spots here and there. Underside is worse, needs welding repairs. Exhaust also rattles, i hope it only needs proper fixing. There are also some "modifications" made by previous owner which i now need to deal with. Engine vent for example is forced to work from the moment when key is turned, plus some wiring mess.

Front brakes (Delco) is my current worry, at least one caliper is stuck on sliders, I'm working on these first as they are the main obstacle for getting our local "MOT". I've already replaced rear brake pads and brake drums with all the springs inside but i think one of the pistons was also stuck there.

It does not start well when cold. It stutters and dies a couple of times but eventually starts. Idle is jumpy when cold, better when warm. Haven't had the time to get onto it yet. All i know is that the rubber hose from intake to air filter and AFM? is cracked, i tried cleaning the idle valve but this didn't help much. If anyone has an idea what to replace next (Coolant temp. sensor?) then I'm all open for help.

This is a quick overview of my new car. I start to like it the more I get to drive it but I cant enjoy something that doesn't work properly.

I hope it's ok to ask newbie questions when I stumble upon some problems. Also any useful info on these is very welcome. Anything at all, my knowledge about Opels/Vauxhalls is basically unexistant

Cheers

Hello everyone

Hi everyone, looking for recommendations where I might be able to source window trims, seals etc for a 1987 Mk2 Cavalier cabriolet. Looking to renew the roof and obviously would be good to make it water tight. Any knowledge greatly appreciated. Thanks

	Hi

As above back after a long time being absent! Hoping life is going to give me some time now! To that end I finally have a cavalier back on the road. I've owned it for about 33 is years I think.

It was last briefly on the road for our wedding in 2012 but that was a bit of a fudge I think just to use it for the wedding!

Someone in the past gave me my user name, can't remember who but if you feel the need it would now be 12 cavaliers (3 MK3's)!

It'd be good to get to VBOA if that's possible? I don't know how many of the old faces are still here but it'd be good to catch up.

	Hi All

I recently bought a Mk2 cavalier - i have added a lot of info on facebook, so apologies for any duplication

This is my fourth mk2 cav, but there has been around 25 years between them. She was bought on ebay, sight unseen in Bideford - only a 500 mile round trip!

I took my good friend Martin down with me in my Vectra B estate all loaded with oil, coolant, tools, jump back, jack and a jerry can of petrol. We left my house in Essex at just gone 6am and got home at about 10pm. The little green cavvy was excellant, apart from the starter packing up at hook services, but a qick bump start and we were back on our way.

She has been to the garage for pre MOT check and she needs a couple of bits of welding which i am getting priced up. The idea will be to take her back to as close as stock as possible so the splitter hand grill have been removed and the reflective number plate panel & steering will be off in the next couple of days. Then i will get the welding done and the starter motor. Next up will be springs, shocks and exhaust before we move on to the timing belt, brakes (discs and pads) and steel wheels.

I assume getting any replacements for the green interior will be like hens teeth so not sure what i will do with the drivers seat as it has a metal bar showing at side.

Changed the plugs, oil and coolant yesterday

Plenty to do and she will never be perfect, but she will survive

	Hi there guys

I am Curtley Prince from South Africa I've owned my 1985 Opel Ascona 1.8 Gls 5speed Hatchback for the last 4 years.

Through the years the car has seen many repairs or should I say tasteful upgrades.

Bought the car with 13 inch steel wheels.

Processed to buy white 14 inch tear drops.

Drove the car for few months

	Battery gave in

	Replaced battery

	Fuel pump gave in

	Replaced it

	Then the carburator

Replaced it with KEIHIN KS2 popular conversion in South Africa (citi golf carburator)

Got a counterfeit pan cake K&N filter

Cylinder two on the head didn't have any spark

	Got head reconditioned

	Accelerator cable broke

Used a mk1 golf accelerator cable

I thought the carburator was faulty because the settings wasn't proper Near the end of 2020 the head gasket went unbeknownst to me.

	Replaced the fuel pump again

	Unfortunately didn't solve the issue

	In April 2021

	The head gasket was done

	Carburator was reconditioned

In May 2021 I replaced the front brake pads

	In August 2021

The right rear wheel cylinder burst

Which caused the wheel to lock

	Left the car like that

In 2022 January I proceed to fit the astra mk2 rear disc setup

Drove the car like that for better part of a year without handbrake

In August 2022 I imported left mirror from UK

Cause they are extremely rare in South Africa

	in October 2022

I had the tear drops reconditioned

I got Lcd digital cluster fitted

Ignition wire burned for a second time.

	November 2022

I fitted the cheapest HID kits I could find.

	Demeber 2022

I fitted 256mm front discs with FN52/24 calipers

	January 2023

I fitted astra mk5 rear disc setup

After bleeding the brakes the brake master cylinder gave in

Huge fluid leak into the brake booster

I was lucky to find a suitable replacement apparently the escort mk3 and opel ascona uses the same brake master cylinder.

So I finally had the chance to get my hands back on a Ascona C again, which I had as my first car at 19 - this time it wont really be used as a daily driver, as the winters up here in Scandinavia are loong and the main roads around the larger cities are salted almost every day when its minus Celsius (the season for classic "veteran" cars is typically very late April to early October), but this will be more intended for tinkering and summer joyrides.

The car itself is a fairly standard 1984 1.6S GL (40 y.o this month hooray), 90bhp thereabouts, in the CC form - which spent the majority of its life up in the dry, cold mountains so the rust is minimal as far as Mid Norway goes - tho it probably got maneuvered across a mailbox or a badger sometime in its life so a new front panel and wing will be fitted in 2025 (oh and a new wing mirror will be installed as well - shoutout to Ebay). Got MOT'd with zero faults this summer so that was a pleasant surprise

Further goals for next year includes refurbishing the carburettor as it seems to operate a little sluggish in cold weather - getting the cassette player back in shape would also be mint.

Briefly about the owner: Father of two girls, IT consultant, big 80s aficionado, technical skill level: eager learner

I purchased towards the end of last year a one owner SR that has been off the road for 33 odd years. I am in the process of recommisioning but finding it difficult to obtain some parts and info. For instance I require a new fuel tank but cannot find a seller for the correct carb tank. Also having difficulty finding a supplier for an exhaust system.

Hi all, starting to dig around in here again now I'm finally managing to commit to the Ascona properly this year! It really has been one problem after another with it over time, from odd sized mechanical parts, difficult to obtain panels, paint problems or rather him snapping his back mid way through! Courier companies damaging new parts the list went on. Hey ho, restoration from the ground up never runs smoothly as you'll likley all know even with smaller projects but it's coming now. So where are we as of now? Well it runs, I need a stainless making up for it before spring, tyres to order, seats & carpets in and a few other bits but it's 75% there now. All the suspension & steering components were blasted & painted, everything replaced where necessary, all new piping fuel & brake, engine completely rebuilt, crank re-grind, new pistons, rings & shells, head skimmed, valves sorted, new seals. Basically it's a 0 miles engine at the moment. Finally got it back from paint, I wasn't happy with a few bits so they were rectified, found a better used bonnet (no2), paint was such a decent standard it showed every ripple, they weren't happy with it, neither was I so off again it was, found a new bonnet (no3) that was right!

It was last on the road November 94 so this year is it's 30th year, that's what made it a must really to get it sorted. It was only on the road 12! I'm in touch with the army medic who brought it over from Germany in 1985, he's aware it still survives and wants to come see it when done, so I've got some details from new and with who/how it got to be over here. Rear screen is being bonded in this morning, so off I go for another box ticked!

So in February I bought a 1984 Opel Ascona 1.8 Gls 5speed Hatchback

	For a super bargin

Car needs some work but overall it looks not to bad.

There is some cosmetics needing fixing but I like it as it is don't intent on spraying it. So I started breaking it but I've stopped in the middle of it and having another idea to fix it instead of braking it cause body is solid.

Please let me know what your thoughts are. Save it, break it and scrap it.

	So faults on the car

	I sold master cylinder

	Rear brakes needs attention

Need a master cylinder or just swap the brake servo and master cylinder all together.

	Will need new wheels

	Cluster isn't working

	Door handles

Engine is finished my thought is just to fit a fuel injection engine 20seh or even a 18se doesn't matter.

I test fitted a Kadett E (astra mk2) brake servo and master cylinder to it just need some adapters for the brake lines then the master cylinder might work.

I fitted my spare highlights to it

	Astra mk2 left mirror

I fitted rear disc from astra mk3 but I purposely fitted the right side to the left to see if it would work yes I know I'm insane.
