  1. That's quite a common pattern of interest to be honest. I'm quite involved with a couple of Citroen groups on the net, and it's very noticeable that the interest is either in top-spec GTI models, or very early poverty-spec models. The "comfortable upper-mid-class cruiser" models are not as in demand. Which is fine by me. Makes them cheaper for when I want to buy one. ;D
  2. Save it? Not a hope now. I stripped the car for every single last useful component. The scrapman got a completely bare shell. Almost everything was sold off in the end. As for welding it? Would have taken FOREVER! The structure of the car was severely compromised, and when I say severely, I really mean it. I have no fear over welding, and if it had been physically possibly to re-construct the car within say a year, I would have done it. It really would have needed the entire back end of the car unstitching at the spot welds, and new fabricated panels letting in. The rear chassis legs (I assume that's what you call the bits the rear springs bear on) were wafer thin, the boot floor had all the structural integrity of tissue paper and all the seams were completely rotten. The real shame is that the rear arches and door bottoms were fine, it was the slow ingress of moisture from the crap body repairs in 1994 that caused the problem. Some cars rot out before their time, and others seem to last for ages. This one rotted out.
  3. Many, but they are all film-camera photos, and I don't have a scanner. The only picture I do have scanned in is this one, which is a slightly odd angle to take a photo from, but hey. I always found that car to be deceptively fast. Obviously 115hp is not massive, but it seemed to have far more mid-range torque than was strictly necessary > Was also just about the best long-distance vehicle I've driven. 600 miles in a day? No problem. It also had the most sensible heater design and one of the most ergonomic dashboards I've ever used. The column stalks with the little recess for two fingers? Brilliant. Also, no power steering, and it doesn't need it. Feeling the road FTW. Just as a little addendum, I've also had a '90 MK3 2.0GLi. Nice enough, but I preferred the MK2.
  4. Hello all. Registering here is clearly a bad idea. It will make me want another MK2 Cav, and given that I already own something like 10 vehicles, that's asking for trouble. The previous MK2 I had was a great car, and has an interesting (well, I think so) little story behind it. It was bought brand new in 1988 by my father, as an ex-demonstrator car with no more than a couple of hundred miles on it. As it wasn't "New" new, he managed to get a 2.0GLi model for the same price as a "new" 1.6GL. He chose a Cav as he was looking for a mainstream car, and he'd had both Cavs and Sierras as hire cars, and thought the Cav was a much better car. Dark Blue, 2.0GLi Hatchback with the 115hp engine, fitted carpet mats and light grey/blue velour interior. Dad drove the car for about 7 years, putting well over 120k miles on it. He then got a company car, and my mother got the MK2. Mum then didn't really drive the MK2 very much as she thought it too big and heavy for her (which I can somewhat understand) and we came to the conclusion we'd have to sell it. I mentioned to the buyer that I'd be interested in buying it back when he was done with it. 18 months later I get a call, and the car is then mine. I drove it for about another 2 years, at which point corrosion problems became rather severe. In about 1994 we'd had some bodywork repair done to the back of the car, and it turns out the work had been done really rather badly. Water had been seeping into the box sections at the back of the car, and rotting them from the inside. In 2001 the rear panel, both bottom corners, both sills and the boot floor basically fell off the car, so that was a bit terminal. A massive shame. Overall, the car lived for 13 years, did 185k miles, popped 2 fuel pump relays, snapped 2 cambelts ( I do so love a non-interference engine), and snapped a clutch cable. More noticeably, it never had its head off, it never needed a clutch, the gear oil was never changed and it never had new rear shoes. (amongst other things that I've no-doubt forgotten) Rather amusingly, I still have the front seats from the car. Both have been adapted into desk chairs, and I'm currently sitting on the passenger seat of the car while I type this to you. I've never found another seat as comfortable or as supportive. So... Who's going to sell me a top-spec CDi model? ;D
