Hi im new here, im only 16 i own a rover mini that im restoring but im looking to get a cavalier Mk2 of some sort to keep locked up ready for when im bored of the mini. Im a vauxhall fanatic when i was knee high i had to stop by any vauxhall dealer or my local plant (Luton) just to look at cars or nick a few brochures lol. Everyone in my close family have atleast owned 2 or more Mk2's each, shame they didn't keep em  :-[ ,try and find a few pics. Ill look into becoming a fully fledged member once i get one.

Hi thanks for the welcome  :),  when i first got the mini 2 years ago right indicators were turned on by flicking stalk for left hand side and left handside worked when you pressed the hazards. Its going to be a long haul project (see http://www.theminiforum.co.uk/forums/index.php?showtopic=12710&st=195) but i want to get the cavalier soon before they turn extinct  :-[ ,so i think as soon as i can get a lock up ill get the cash together and look for a CDI or a SRI OR SRI 130.

Finding a good cdi could be hard,

Personally id look at an sri or something along that line

130s are going for a lot more money when there isnt that huge a difference really ;)

As for mini electrics i ended up replacing the whole loom as i got sick of tracing endless problems ;D

What would Gordon do?

I'm prepared to throw in a years membership with this mk2, because I'd really like to see it again, hence why I've not yet put it in autotrader for some raster from toxteth to buy.

I've been thinking things over i've seen Jason W has a 2.5 v6 from a mk3 cavalier on here, but i wasn't sure whether you could convert a 3.0 v6 from an omega onto the 2.5 v6 vectra gearbox (sorry dont know what one it is ::)) similar to the vectra 3.0 conversion in last months Total Vauxhall and stick it into the front of a mk2, i cant see why not but there probably is issues  :-[, But in general plan will be when i eventually get a mk2, itll be virtually standard inside and out, but engine/gearbox, brakes, suspension etc. will be upgraded, hopefully scare a couple of RS focus's and the like. Im looking at getting a set of Mk3 Cavalier GSI wheels and modifying them with a deeper dish and converting them into a split rim design, as i've seen wheels converted on other cars especially minis.

Ive seen the 3.0 v6 engine put into a mk2 astra so if it fits in that then it will deffo fit into a cav ;)

Thets not saying its easy like just possible.

As for banding the wheels i know a lot of rally boys used to do it but they weren't worried about balancing.

This was a big problem for anyone wanting to use them on the road.

Still its been a while since ive been on the mini scene so maybe things have changed

What would Gordon do?

the 3.0 engine was a RWD unti, so long a you can get hold of a FWD sump and manifolds there wouldn't be much of an issues in converting it.....

The conversion itself to get a V6 into a cav isn't difficult either, so long as you have a steady hand and a good quality welder, the RH chassis leg needs cutting and a new bracket welding into place, this is because the mount for the V6 is very different from the normal 4 cylinder cars.

Bear in mind a V6 is a heavy engine in comparson to say a 2.0 16V engine and it is a lot slower going through the rev band, although a lightened flywheel will sort that issue out, at best a modded 2.5 will give you 200bhp, a modded 3.0 will do 220bhp, both of these are without getting into the realms of megamoney, they will sound nice and go pretty well, but will never really threaten a scooby or ST focus, for that you would be better off with a 16v or turbo lump

As for cutting and rewelding the wheels, i wouldn't personally, unless you have facilities for that type of specialised process, i know with steel wheels they never ran true after they had been banded, alloy would give other issues like strength as well

I was thinking along the lines of a 3.0 v6 modded to the extreme but take my time, sort of what i have done with the mini go mad on mods but take my time doing them so i can afford it. What do you think i could get out of a 3.0 v6 if i go mad with it? Ive been looking at a Mk1 Astra thats been converted with a Calibra 4 wheel drive floor pan and was thinking would it be possible to use the same principle on the cavalier with a Cav turbo or calibra turbo block? The wheels would be done by professionals i was just thinking about it because i don't particually like aftermarket non GM wheels on the Cavalier and using a GM wheel as a base to keep the origin of the car but make them bigger with a more interesting rim with split rim design bolts going through them all the way round similar to the latest idea in the mini cirle use original 79/80 mini special wheels take the rim off and make them into a wider split rim wheel.

here's the thing with modifying........

Anything is possible if you either

A) have enough money to throw at it....

or

B) have the patience and resiliance to keep pushing on with a project even when all others around you have given up.....

Most projects i have seen are more B than A, however what you would like to do is extreme, i have seen the Astra and it does look very nice, car of the show at billing 2005 (and that is an achievement)

you would need a jig, or something that will hold the car square whilst you cut huge great chunks out of it, good welding skills and fabricating skills as well, a well sized garage would be helpful as well

What could you get out of a 3.0V6, well that depends on how much you have to spend, i have been told though that the 3.0 doesn't like being modded as much as the 2.5 does, but i would imagine 300 without turbo and a lot more with...and even more with two of them......

only thing i would say is space, there isn't a great deal of it after the engine is in place, lobbing turbos on would take up space that isn't there and create heat beyond you wildest imagination

nothing is impossible, i was talking about a V6 conversion 4 years ago....now finally i have nearly completed in, in the meantime my cabby has had a 1.8, 2.0 16V and now the V6.

Cheers yeah i can understand what your on about for sure, i think it would definately be a long term project i've managed to cope with doing my mini for two years, i reckon i still have a couple more too  :-\, but ill be looking for a cavalier very soon and it'll be put in a lock up until the mini is done, then the fun will begin ;D. Id like to go bonkers with it and i think that the 2.0 16v and turbo conversions are getting extremely popular and after seeing your 2.5 v6 i think ill have to go mad with a 3.0 v6 dunno about turbos though have to see cause as you say you'd be using space that aint there.
